Giant Northern Petrel

An unusual visitor to our Wellington shores. The Department of Conservation were attempting to net this bird. It may have sought shelter in Wellington after strong Southerlies this week. I’ve photographed them on the water in Otago but it was spectacular to see one in flight with a colossal wingspan of 80-95cm and weight of 3-5kg dwarfing our common gulls. Native to New Zealand with a conservation status Recovering. 70-200mm cropped.
