Black-billed gull

Black-billed Gull or Tarāpuka are Endemic to New Zealand and the most threatened gull on earth. I photographed this one through the perimeter fence before Christmas in the flooded foundations of a partially demolished building in Christchurch. The Tarāpuka are nesting there for a second breeding season after the owners of this site failed to put nets up in time to stop them. The gulls are protected under the Wildlife Act and cannot be disturbed. The birds usually breed on braided rivers of the South Island. 70-200mm cropped.
