Kārearea or New Zealand Falcon (Shadow) during an outdoor demonstration at Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust in Rotorua. Kārearea are a magpie-sized raptor that feed predominantly on live prey, endemic to New Zealand and our most threatened bird of prey. Captive pairs of Kārearea have been established at Wingspan from birds that have been injured (mostly shot) that couldn’t be rehabilitated and released into the wild. Widespread but rare the persecution of Kārearea is commonplace throughout New Zealand with some shot every year. There’s an estimated 3,000 left. 70-200 mm 2.8, cropped
