Schrund

My climbing companions prepare to follow me across the bergschrund at the base of Mount Dixon in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand. We didn't get much higher before accepting that the super-dry powder snow would give us no chance to put in anchors as we climbed higher. The winter season to this point had seen much less snowfall than normal, meaning there was no consolidated snow base. A warming climate is making mountaineering increasingly challenging and dangerous / Lumix TZ 220, a stitch of 2 landscape shots, F8, 1/200, ISO 125, 24mm
