Pectoral Sandpipers

Pectoral Sandpipers

Native to New Zealand - a rare migrant with only 10-20 birds observed each year. Usually seen at estuaries, river mouths and on the margins of lowland lakes. Breed in northern North America and Siberia and migrate to South America and to a lesser extent Australasia. They feed in grass or mud away from the waters edge, consuming insects, crustaceans and seeds.
