Leopard seal
Leopard Seal injured by the barb of a Ghost shark after it became attached to the left side of it’s face in Owhiro Bay, Wellington. Members of the public managed to dislodge the fish from the Seal’s head but a large barb remained imbedded in it’s tongue. NZ Whale-Rescue.org were on-site to monitor the seal and the area was cordoned off the safety of the seal and public. I was approached by a member of NZ Whale Rescue on-site to view my photos in camera, take a screen shot to send to a vet who could assess the Seal’s injuries. 100-400mm cropped - shot from the footpath. Usually found in the Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic regions but occasionally make it to New Zealand shores. They are the only Seals known to hunt and kill warm- blooded prey.
