Leopard Seal

A sleepy juvenile female resting early evening at Owhiro Bay in Wellington. Leopard Seals primarily inhabit the Antarctic pack ice but occasionally visit New Zealand in Autumn and Winter months. They are the only seal known to regularly hunt and kill warm blooded prey which includes other seals. They are protected under the Marine animals act 1978.
