Kereru Feeding on Cabbage Tree Berries
Kereru are a large native New Zealand wood pigeon. Historically, they were a valuable food source for Maori, but are now fully protected. They feed on berries and shoots. They are capable but noisy fliers. Unlike most pigeon species, they only lay one egg at a time in a flimsy nest built of sticks in a tree.
This photo was taken with my Olympus E-M1 MkII camera late afternoon, and shows the beautiful iridescence of its plumage. Camera settings were ISO 400, f5.6, 1/1250s
