Kererū

Kererū or Wood Pigeon are endemic to Aotearoa. They are very important to the survival of our forests because they are the only birds left big enough to swallow fruits of Native trees and disperse their seed. Food of Kererū include buds, leaves and fruit from a variety of species, both native and exotic. I watched this one at Otari-Wilton’s Bush in Winter quietly plucking the fresh green shoots of a Kōwhai tree. 70-200mm cropped.
