Hoiho - Yellow-eyed Penguin

The Hoiho or Yellow-eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes) is the rarest species of penguin in the world, and only found in New Zealand and our sub-antarctic islands. It is declining on the mainland due to loss of habitat, predators, set-nets and starvation. Pairs mate for life and nest amongst flax or in dense bush, often well above the coast, so sometimes have to climb steep banks to get to their nesting areas.

This photo was taken with my Olympus E-5 camera and the Olympus 300 mm f2.8 lens. Settings were ISO 800, f3.2, 1/800s
