Native to New Zealand, Petrel are aggressive opportunistic seabirds that scavenge penguin, albatross and whale carrion. They prey on penguin and albatross chicks, also take fish and squid from the sea surface. An estimated 2,570 pairs breed in New Zealand annually before dispersing to temperate subtropical seas during winter.
