Bubbles at Minnewanka

Bubbles at Minnewanka

Phot by Connull Lang

This lake was created when they built a hydro dam to supply the town of Banff with power in 1941. In doing that they flooded another town called Minnewanka Landing. All the decaying material at the bottom of the lake releases methane gas which floats up and gets tapped in the ice as the lake starts to freeze. You can ( if you want) chisel the ice bubbles open and ignite the gas pockets which burn away with a flash
