This young Black-fronted Tern stood out with its characteristic orange legs amongst a flock of White-fronted Terns at Waikanae beach. Black-fronted Terns are endemic to New Zealand with a conservation status of nationally endangered. Their numbers have declined significantly since European settlement and continue to do so. 100-400mm x1.4 extender cropped - shot from approximately 20m away.
