Black-fronted tern

Huge thank you to Michael Szabo for posting that amongst a large group of Tara at Island Bay today were several delicate wee Black-fronted terns. This one appears to be a juvenile. Black-fronted Terns are endemic to New Zealand with a conservation status of nationally endangered. Their numbers have declined significantly since European settlement and continue to do so. It was disappointing to witness an adult actively encouraging his kids to chase them off the rocks in-spite of me politely asking that they didn’t scare them.
